Film of the Year 2014

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Firstly, I'm going to say sorry for the lack of posts during December - it was a busy month and blogging took a massive back seat which is not how I wanted to end a fantastic year on Ticket Stub. To make up for this, I'm starting 2015 with the Film of the Year for 2014! I will also combine a brief December Film of the Month to this post too.

So let's have a very brief look back at last month's films. This final month of the year was actually pretty disappointing for movie-going. I only managed to see two films during December, and didn't get the chance to see the biggest film The Hobbit! I know, this is very poor. (Don't worry, it will be in the January 2015 round up).

As usual here is the rating system:

* = Poor. Why did I even bother?!

** = OK. Could have done better.

*** = Good. Recommended though don’t feel bad you don’t get to see this one.

**** = Excellent. Not quite perfect but highly recommended.

***** = Masterpiece. You’d be a fool not to see this film.

Dumb and Dumber To

The dumbest duo are back in a not-so-eagerly awaited sequel. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels look like they had fun making this themselves, but is it funny for the rest of us? Not so much. If you're a fan of the first film (really?!), then you'll probably enjoy this. For the majority though, there is no need to see it.

Big Eyes

Tim Burton unexpectedly directs this movie starring Christoph Waltz and the brilliant Amy Adams. The story is exciting and it is actually rather refreshing to not have Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter starring in yet another Burton picture. Adams is excellent and Waltz plays the creepy crook very well. A great story that I would certainly recommend.

June Film of the Month

Can you believe we are half way through 2014?
Only 6 months til we find out Ticket Stub's Film of the Year!

22 Jump Street

After seeing 21 Jump Street and being pleasantly surprised at how hilarious it was, I was looking forward to seeing this sequel. Although it may not be as funny as the first, 22 still had me giggling throughout. The film was great in taking the mickey out of itself - mainly stating that the second time round is always more expensive and less funny. The bromance between Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum is as strong as ever. Stay for the end credits - plenty of laughs to be had including a brilliant cameo by Seth Rogen. Recommended comedy choice.

The Fault in Our Stars

Being a fan of the book by John Green, I was in full support of this film before it began - biased, I know! I'm thrilled that the comedy came across on screen as the book, as well as being incredibly sad, has plenty of wit. There were a few set backs though. Some of the lines are a tad too cheesy and that scene in the Anne Frank house? Terribly cringe-worthy. Despite this, the emotion of Hazel and Gus's story had me in tears, along with the whole cinema by the sounds of the sniffing. Bring tissues.

Jersey Boys

Featured as Trailer Tuesday back in May, I was quite excited to see the adaptation of the Tony award winning musical. However, I was left slightly disappointed. The musical numbers, although were very good, fell slightly flat. Is it because Clint Eastwood isn't used to making a musical? It is certainly evident here. Subsequently, the film's pace dragged with unnecessary amounts of dialogue. It is only until the end credits that the pazazz I'm sure many cinema goers were hoping for comes alive. Too little, too late unfortunately.

Trailer Tuesday: The Fault in Our Stars (2014)

On Wednesday, The Fault in Our Stars trailer was released racking up a total number of 3 million views in just 24 hours - and the view count is still growing (over 9 million at this point). If you have read the book by John Green then you'll definitely want to see this movie.

The Fault in Our Stars tells the story of Hazel, a 16 year old cancer patient who meets and falls in love with Augustus at a cancer support group. Although you may think this is a depressing story, and yes there are some very sad moments, the book is also witty and romantic. I hoping this will come across on screen.

Directed by Josh Boone, the movie stars some relatively new faces with Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort taking the lead roles. Yet there are some familiar faces too, including Williem Dafoe, Laura Dern and True Blood TV star, Sam Trammell.

If you'd like to know more about the making of the film, I suggest heading over to John Green's YouTube channel (he makes video blogs with/to his brother, Hank). He was on set for some of the film and interviewed a few of the stars of the movie.

The Fault in Our Stars will be released on 20th June 2014 in the UK.
